Thanks for your thoughts. I've been on DA on/off for nearly 10 years on various accounts and have never really had much success with it. I'm from the UK so I wonder if in missing out on more exposure as the site is heavily US inclined and whilst they're online networking and chatting I'm normally asleep... I will try and be more active though and see if that helps. One last try.

I collect tutorials like this for my students and other people interested in making art. This is definitely one of the best I've seen on the subject of DeviantArt and how to go about using it.

I don't suppose you've considered doing a You Tube video?

I'm trying to get back onto to DA after being off for a while, and I just made a new account
This is extremely helpful
.....I wonder why I didn't look at these when I first got on. Probably would have saved my some trouble.
anyway, I appreciate the help. Thanks for helping we n00bs :D

Thanks for this~ I didn't even realize dA had a chatroom until now, and I've been on for one and a half years. =_=' Do you recommend joining a lot of groups to get your work out there? I feel kinda cheap joining groups just to put in my own art, but it is pretty effective for getting views...idk.

Yes, it's a good thing for exposure! Groups weren't available back when I wrote the tutorial!

Thanks :)

I feel like sometimes i've missed some of these rules as quantity over quality, or idunno. And also i'm still trying to develop my own style for drawing.
Thanks for the guide. :)

Good tips! Thank you!

I also noticed that most of the really awesome artists don't take the time to reply to comments. That really bugs me. We should all communicate and help each other. At least say thank you, artists.

I'm in the process of "finding my style" Hmm..but I like so many things! haha!

Anyway, thanks again!

Not to butt in or anything, but I think the more popular artists kind of give up on replying to everyone individually because they just get so much feedback. Many of them would be spending all day in their message center if they tried to respond to everyone, and it'd be unfair to comment back to some but not others. However, you're definitely right that there are just some deviants who aren't here to chat and don't care to communicate with their viewers.

Just my two cents there.

i love how you explained everything in this. informative with a bit of humor, plus catching the reader's attention. nice, i love writing that way. even my teacher says she likes it. xD i'll be sure to follow these instructions/advice to get people's attention. i've been trying for years but no one has been viewing my art. one wouldn't even need to comment, i'd be happy enough with views!

one question: how do you create watermarks? or do you have a tutorial for that, too? O:

haha thanks! I improved my english a lot since this tutorial was written :)

Here's an inspiring presentation by Seth Godin which is somewhat relevant to your frustrations :D

well, I don't have a tutorial for that, but it's a good idea; I'll make one soon!
Stay tuned!

O: i'm truly inspired now. i mean, when it comes to speeches and things like that, i'm soooo not into them, it's serious. i'd be asleep before they say the first word. XD but since i want my art to spread, i listened. and found he was actually entertaining and funny. x3

I admire his determinism and how he posts everyday on his blog. And he's not posting just fluff... Insightful ideas that make you think!

Anyhow, I'll soon post a tutorial on how to create watermarks :)

Top guide, I read the whole thing. Another thing you might not have thought of is offering art as desktop wallpapers? I found a neat wordpress plugin so I can link the deviant thumbnails from my site [link]

try to resist yourself from updating that different photo/drawing
put them in your folder and say "maybe later" :D
that's how I manage to not upload everything I create!

I've been a total comment hoe lately in other communities. I've been looking to do the same.

X3 I guess in this case.. I have to ask myself, how does a comment whore with little art experience carve a niche in DA? X3

I've been trying to make my own avatar (as you can see lol, and by request of a friend) and I had huge trouble getting it in the right size and still it isn't as I wanted it, perhaps it's the drawing itself... still I'd like to know how I can turn a gif-document into the right size (15kb)

thank you ^^
